Lotus Blossom Quilt Pattern!

Lotus Blossom Quilt

I’ve just released my Lotus Blossom Quilt so you can make it at home! The pattern is available as a PDF download. Lotus Blossom includes a coloring page, cutting tags for maximum organization, and pattern pieces that are easy to print and assemble. The finished quilt is one of two sizes: a 41 x 56 inch crib and an 82 x 112 inch queen.

Inspiration

May all beings be free of suffering and the cause of suffering.

I wanted to design a quilt that represented the peace and thoughtfulness of Immeasureable Compassion. (For more insight into the Buddhist concept of the Four Immeasureables, click here). This aspiration is particularly important to me when I think about what is happening in our society right now, and who gets to stay home safe with their families and who has to leave their homes to perform essential duties. I’m also meditating on the need for comfort that exists when a loved one falls ill and cannot receive visits from friends and family. The Lotus Blossom has long been a symbol of overcoming difficulty. The Lotus starts as a bud underwater (like in a murky pond) and emerges a beautiful, full bloom above the surface. “May all beings be free…”

I made this queen version for my guest room, and I’m very much in love with how beautiful it looks in Bela Solids. The drape of this quilt is really pleasing. This was quilted by the incomparable Janell Rutz of Cadenza Quilting. She is legit!

The Lotus Blossom motif is made up of orange peel shapes, overlapped and applique-stitched down by machine. The background is an assortment of pairs of strips, cut to different widths, and arranged so they appear to be gently gradating from dark to light. This pattern offers many ways to play with color and gradient combinations, and is most fun when the motif contrasts with the background.

My testers rocked their versions of the pattern, and I am so grateful for their time and skill! Here in this blog post I’m limiting my show and tell to three testers so I can save the others for a follow up blog post that also showcases some of your work. Oh lordy, this back deck beauty is made up of Art Gallery Fabrics basics and the colors make me happy! I love how the background looks like a horizon meeting the sky. Pieced by Madison Modern Quilt Guild Vice President Tiffany Grayson, who you can find on Instagram @t1ffanygrayson.

Thanks for reading and I hope you are safe and well. Be kind to one another and ask for help if and when you need it.
